Session Description:
This webinar will discuss oppressive structures and the ways that they
shape day to day experience in post secondary education. The focus
will also be a discussion of how advisors can develop practices of critical
reflection that will help them move towards better, more equitable,
relationships in their own practice. The webinar will be informed by a
praxis approach that sees theory and practice as connected.

Topics will include:

• Understanding racism and oppression as cultural, structural and historical
• Structural racism and how it shapes student experience
• Ways that systemic racism is embedded in the institutional practices of higher education
• Challenging common sense ideas that work to perpetuate oppressive structures
• Reflective practices that can inform anti-oppressive approaches to advising work in colleges and universities. These include:
  • Being critically aware of historical and ongoing inequity that shapes post secondary spaces
  • Valuing the other

Presenter Information:
Dr. Stacey Crooks is a sessional instructor in the Faculty of Education, University of Regina, Canada. She completed a PhD in Leadership, Higher and Adult Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. She has worked in adult upgrading, literacy, and English as and additional language programs in community-based, college and university settings. Most recently she worked as an Academic Transition Advisor at the University of Regina. Her interests include deficit thinking in adult education, anti-oppressive and anti-racist approaches to education and trauma-informed pedagogies.
