Theme: Supporting Diversity & Inclusion through Post-secondary Student Advising

Description:
“Effective advising programs acknowledge the diversity of student values, experiences, and motivations” (UC Berkley) that drive them through their post-secondary studies. It is important as advisors that we respond appropriately to the diverse needs of our students. This conference aims to support advisors in examining the ways in which our attitudes, beliefs and behaviours in our advising practice, as well as the systems and policies we work within, shape and support or inhibit diversity and inclusion.

We are pleased to announce our Keynote Speaker, Jack Saddleback.  Jack is a Cree, Two-Spirit Transgender gay man from the Samson Cree Nation in Maskwacis, Alberta.  He is a spokesperson for both Mental Health Canada and Bell’s Let’s Talk Billboard Campaign, one of CBC’s top 40 Under 40, and travels the country advocating for mental health, gender and sexual diversity, two-spirit issues, and HIV-AIDS.  Jack was also the first elected transgender student union president at the University of Saskatchewan, and the third Indigenous person to hold that position.  At the AASK Conference, Jack will share his personal story of navigating University, and bring forward a message of self-awareness, identity and embracing our authentic self.
